Short description of Kuntaur
Kuntaur is a small river port on the north bank that was once a groundnut wharf and is now the landing everybody uses to reach the upper river. A short drive north stands the country's best known field of laterite pillars, raised over burial grounds more than a thousand years ago and inscribed as world heritage together with sites in Senegal. Downstream a chain of forested islands holds a chimpanzee population released back into the wild over decades. Boats go out from the landing to watch them from the water. Landing on the islands themselves is forbidden.
