Short description of Janjanbureh
Janjanbureh sits on an island in the middle of the river well upstream, reached by ferry from either bank, and was a colonial administrative town whose buildings are now mostly roofless among the mango trees. It is the base for the upper river, where hippos surface in the channels and boats go out to look for them. North of town a field of laterite pillars set up over a thousand years ago forms part of a world heritage listing shared with Senegal. Chimpanzees live on a group of islands upstream. Landing on any of those islands is not permitted.
