Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine

Ivano-Frankivsk

Ukraine · Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast · 244 m

Description

Ivano-Frankivsk (Iwano-Frankiwsk) was founded in 1662 as a Polish private town called Stanisławów and kept a compact baroque grid that survived the twentieth century better than most of Galicia. It is the airport and railway gateway to the Carpathians, so almost everyone heading for Bukovel or Yaremche passes through, and the pedestrianised Nezalezhnosti street has grown a café and gallery culture out of that traffic. The city hall in the middle of the market square is an art deco rebuild of the old Polish town hall.
