Huambo

Angola · 1700 m

Short description of Huambo

Huambo was laid out by the Portuguese as a planned highland city and was meant at one point to become the capital, which is why its grid of avenues and squares is so much grander than the place needs. It was wrecked in the fighting of the nineties and has been substantially rebuilt since. The railway works here are the largest anywhere on the whole line. Mount Moco, the highest point in the country at over two thousand six hundred metres, is a couple of hours away and holds birds that are found nowhere else.
