Short description of Al Zubarah
Al Zubarah was a walled pearling and trading town on the northwest coast that grew rich on the Gulf trade and was abandoned after it was sacked, leaving its street plan buried under sand. That burial is why it survives as it does, and why it is the only World Heritage site Qatar has. The fort above it dates from long after the town and now serves as the visitor centre, with the excavations reached from it by a shuttle and a boardwalk. There is no shade out on the site and nothing else for forty kilometres.
