Short description of Al Shamal
Al Shamal is the northern tip of the peninsula, thinly settled and mostly visited on a single long loop out of the capital. Al Jumail is the reason to come, a pearling village left empty when the trade collapsed, its coral stone houses and small mosque standing roofless above the shore. Fuwairit has rock carvings on the low outcrops behind its beach and green turtles that come up to nest in the early summer, which closes the sand while they do. Ruwais still lands fish at its harbour. Winter camps go up along the coast. Nothing up here has been tidied for visitors and there is no ticket office on the loop.
