Description
Yekaterinburg (Екатеринбург) is the industrial capital of the Urals and the halfway house of the Trans-Siberian, founded as an ironworks and still built around the dam and pond at its centre. The last tsar and his family were shot in a cellar here in 1918, and the Church on the Blood now stands on the site. Twenty kilometres west a marked obelisk in the forest sits on the line between Europe and Asia, and visitors stand with a foot on each continent. The city also holds some of the boldest constructivist architecture built anywhere in the Soviet Union.
