Sergiev Posad, Russia

Sergiev Posad

Russia · Moscow Oblast · 230 m

Description

Sergiev Posad (Сергиев Посад) grew up around the Trinity Lavra of Saint Sergius, the most important monastery in Russia and the spiritual centre of its Orthodox church. The walled compound holds a dozen churches in one enclosure, the white Trinity Cathedral of 1422 among them, where the Rublev Trinity hung for five centuries before it went to Moscow. A blue and gold bell tower rises eighty eight metres above the rest. Pilgrims queue for the relics of Saint Sergius and fill bottles at the covered spring. The town is the closest of the Golden Ring stops to Moscow.
