Description
Nizhny Novgorod (Нижний Новгород) stands on a high bank where the Oka joins the Volga, and the view from the kremlin ramparts over that junction is the reason most people come. The red brick walls run down the hillside and back up again, thirteen towers linked by a walk that can be made in full. Below them the Chkalov Staircase falls in two great loops to the river. This was the fair town of imperial Russia, where the annual market set the prices for half the country, and the merchant mansions along the embankment date from that trade.
