Description

Kazan (Казань) is the capital of Tatarstan and the place where Muslim and Orthodox Russia sit side by side rather than apart. Inside the white walls of its kremlin the blue minarets of the Kul Sharif Mosque stand a hundred metres from the Annunciation Cathedral, and both were built to be seen together. Beside them leans the Söyembikä Tower, out of true by almost two metres. The Tatar language shares the street signs, the food is its own, and Bauman Street runs through the middle full of people every evening of the year.
