Description
Yaroslavl (Ярославль) is the largest of the Golden Ring towns and stands where the Kotorosl runs into the Volga, on a bend the merchants of the seventeenth century grew rich on. They spent the money on churches, and the results are unusual in Russia, brick built rather than white stone and covered inside with wall painting from floor to vault. The Church of Elijah the Prophet in the middle of the main square is the finest of them. Catherine the Great had the streets laid out on a grid around those churches, which is why the plan is UNESCO listed.
