Description
Kaliningrad (Калининград) is a Russian exclave on the Baltic, separated from the rest of the country by Poland and Lithuania and reachable only by air or by crossing two foreign borders. The city was Königsberg until 1945 and was flattened at the end of the war, so what survives stands in isolation, above all the rebuilt cathedral on its island with the tomb of Immanuel Kant against the outer wall. North of the city the Curonian Spit runs out into the sea, a narrow bar of shifting dunes and pine forest shared with Lithuania. Amber has been mined on this coast for centuries.
