Description
Vladimir (Владимир) was the capital of Rus before Moscow and keeps the buildings that go with it, raised in white limestone on a ridge above the Klyazma. The Assumption Cathedral was the coronation church of the grand princes and still holds frescoes painted by Andrei Rublev in 1408. Along the ridge stands the Cathedral of Saint Demetrius, its upper walls carved over every surface with lions, birds and saints. The Golden Gates, a fortified stone arch, close the old main street at its western end. A meadow outside town holds the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl.
