Description
Sochi (Сочи) is the summer resort of Russia and the busiest domestic holiday destination in the country, a subtropical strip of pebble beaches running for a hundred kilometres between the Black Sea and the wooded wall of the Caucasus. Palms and magnolias line the seafront, and tea grows on the hills behind, the northernmost plantations in the world. An hour inland the road climbs to Krasnaya Polyana, where the 2014 Winter Olympics were held and the gondolas now run all year. The city therefore has two full seasons, beach in summer and snow in winter, which almost nowhere else in Russia offers.
