Description
Tripoli (طرابلس) is Libya's capital and its largest city, a white Mediterranean port founded by the Phoenicians as Oea. Its walled medina holds Ottoman houses, covered souks, the marble arch of Marcus Aurelius and the Gurgi and Ahmed Pasha Karamanli mosques with their tiled interiors. The Red Castle guards the seaward corner and houses the national museum collection. Outside the walls, Italian colonial avenues, a palm lined corniche and Martyrs' Square open onto the harbour. Tripoli is the arrival point for the country and the base from which the Roman cities of the coast are reached.
