Tobruk
Libya · Cyrenaica · 25 m
Description
Tobruk is a port on a deep natural harbour near the Egyptian border, the best anchorage on this stretch of coast and the reason it was fought over for most of two years in the Second World War. The siege made the name known worldwide, and the desert around the town is still marked by trenches and gun positions. Four large war cemeteries lie outside it, Commonwealth, German, French and Italian, the German ossuary built as a sandstone fort on a rise. The harbour, empty beaches and the Egyptian frontier road define the town today.
