Description
Ghat is a Tuareg oasis in the far south west of Libya, pressed against the Algerian border below the Acacus range. Its old town is a compact maze of mud brick lanes and houses climbing to a hilltop fort, largely emptied of residents but still standing, with a palm oasis spreading below. Ghat was a caravan stop on the route between the Niger bend and the Mediterranean and kept a mixed population of Tuareg, Kel Ajjer and Saharan traders. Every expedition into the Acacus mountains and their rock art is organised from here.
