Description
Nalut is a Berber town on the western end of the Jebel Nafusa, built along a ridge that falls away to the desert plain below. Its qasr is the reason to come, a fortified communal granary of hundreds of small vaulted cells stacked several storeys high around a courtyard, each once belonging to a family storing grain and oil. The structure looks like a honeycomb cut into the cliff and is among the best preserved of its kind in North Africa. The old town below it is largely abandoned, and the escarpment gives long views towards Tunisia.
