Description
Leptis Magna is the most complete Roman city on the Mediterranean, spread across a river mouth east of Tripoli and buried by sand for centuries, which is why so much of it stands. The emperor Septimius Severus was born here and rebuilt his home town on an imperial scale, leaving a four sided triumphal arch, a colonnaded forum with gorgon heads, a basilica, vast baths and a marble paved street to the harbour. The theatre and amphitheatre sit apart towards the sea. Its scale and preservation put it alongside Ephesus and Pompeii.
