Benghazi
Libya · Cyrenaica · 25 m
Description
Benghazi (بنغازي) is Libya's second city and the capital of Cyrenaica, built around a salt lagoon on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Sidra. Founded as the Greek colony of Euesperides and later Berenice, it grew under Ottoman and Italian rule into the country's eastern commercial centre. Italian era arcades, the cathedral domes on the waterfront and the covered souks of the old quarter mark the centre, and a long corniche follows the water. Benghazi is also the gateway to the Jebel Akhdar and the Greek cities of the coast further east.
