Description
Ghadames is an oasis at the point where Libya, Algeria and Tunisia meet, known as the pearl of the desert. Its old town is a single connected structure of whitewashed mud brick where covered alleys run at ground level for the men, roof terraces form a separate open street network for the women, and palm gardens are watered by a spring at the centre. The interiors are painted red and white and hung with mirrors and brass. Residents moved to a new town alongside it, but many return to the old houses in summer for the cool.
