Description
The Tadrart Acacus is a sandstone range east of Ghat, eroded into arches, pinnacles and dry canyons that hold thousands of paintings and engravings spanning twelve thousand years. The images move from elephants, giraffes and hippos through herds of cattle to horses and finally camels, recording the drying of the Sahara in a single continuous archive. Adad natural arch and the painted shelters of Awiss and Tin Khlega are among the best known. Travel is by four wheel drive with Tuareg guides, camping between the rocks, and the range carries UNESCO World Heritage status.
