Short description of Mrauk U
Mrauk U (မြောက်ဦး) was the capital of the Rakhine kingdom and still holds hundreds of stone temples scattered across low hills and working rice fields. The temples are built of dark sandstone rather than brick, with thick walls, narrow passages and rows of Buddha figures, and Shittaung, Koe Thaung and Htukkanthein are the largest. Morning mist fills the valleys and makes the sunrise from Shwetaung hill the classic view. Villages between the ruins still farm and weave, so the site never feels emptied out. The long boat journey up the Kaladan River from Sittwe is part of the visit.
