Description
Rangamati sits on the shore of Kaptai Lake, a reservoir made in 1960 by damming the Karnaphuli for a power station, which drowned the old town, the rajah's palace and a quarter of the district's farmland and displaced a hundred thousand Chakma. The lake is now what people come for, a maze of green water between forested ridges crossed by wooden launches all day. A hanging bridge walks out over one arm of it. The Chakma rajah's new palace and the Rajban Vihara monastery stand on the shore. Eleven hill peoples live in the district. Foreigners need a permit for parts of the district and it is checked on the road in.
