Short description of Bago
Bago (ပဲခူး) was the capital of the Mon kingdom of Hanthawaddy and keeps a remarkable density of religious monuments for a small town. The Shwemawdaw Pagoda is the tallest stupa in Myanmar, and the reclining Buddhas of Shwethalyaung and Mya Tha Lyaung lie in the open at the edge of town. The four seated Buddhas of Kyaik Pun face outward from a single pillar, and the rebuilt Kanbawzathadi Palace marks the old royal ground. Roadside workshops make cheroots and monastic robes. Bago sits on the highway and railway north of Yangon, which makes it the usual first stop on the way to the Golden Rock.
