Description
Chattogram is the second city of Bangladesh and its only deep-water port, so almost everything the country imports or exports moves through it. The hills inside the city give it a shape Dhaka has not got, and the British cemetery and the old courthouse sit on top of them. North along the coast at Sitakunda the beaches are lined for kilometres with ships being cut up by hand, the largest shipbreaking yards in the world. Chandranath temple above the town is a Hindu pilgrimage. Mezban beef is the local feast dish. The seven-week uprising against the British in 1930 began with a raid on the armoury here.
