Short description of Bagan
Bagan (ပုဂံ) is the largest concentration of Buddhist temples in the world, with more than two thousand brick pagodas standing on a bend of the Ayeyarwady River. The kingdom that built them ruled from the eleventh to the thirteenth century, and the UNESCO listed plain is still dotted with working monasteries. Ananda, Dhammayangyi, Thatbyinnyu and Shwesandaw are the landmarks among them, and the sunrise, often with hot air balloons above the haze, is the image the country is known for. Lacquerware workshops in New Bagan continue a local craft. E bikes and horse carts are the usual way to cross the plain.
