Short description of Hpa-An
Hpa-An (ဘားအံ) is the capital of Kayin State and sits on the Thanlwin River below a plain of limestone karst towers. Mount Zwegabin rises straight out of the rice fields and is climbed before dawn for the view from its monastery. Caves fill the hills around town, among them Saddan with its river exit by boat, Kawgun lined with clay votive tablets and Yathaypyan. The Lumbini garden below Zwegabin holds more than a thousand seated Buddha statues in rows. Hpa-An is small, green and easy to explore by motorbike, and it is the usual overnight stop between Yangon and the Thai border.
