Short description of Köýtendag
Köýtendag is the mountain corner of the far southeast, where the country's highest ground rises against the Uzbek border and the landscape stops being desert. Its celebrated sight is a bare limestone plateau covered in dinosaur trackways, hundreds of them, walking across rock that was once a shoreline. Below it a gypsum cave system runs for kilometres, though only parts are open and entry depends on permission arranged well ahead. Springs feed narrow gorges and a waterfall that runs strongly after the snow melts. Everything here needs border zone paperwork that an operator must obtain in advance.
