Short description of Turkmenbashi and Awaza
Turkmenbashi is the country's Caspian port, a working harbour town of low Soviet blocks wedged between dry hills and the water. West along the shore the state built Awaza, a purpose made resort strip of glass hotels, a lined artificial river and a groomed beach that fills with Turkmen families through the warm months. The two sit together awkwardly and that contrast is much of the interest. Ferries to Azerbaijan load at the port whenever cargo dictates rather than to any published timetable. The town is also the usual jumping off point for the canyon country inland.
