Short description of Yangykala Canyon
Yangykala is a chalk and limestone canyon system cut into what was once the floor of an ancient sea, banded in pink, red and cream that shifts as the sun moves. Nothing prepares travellers for it because the approach crosses featureless gravel steppe until the ground simply falls away. The rim offers no railings, no water and no settlement of any kind. People come to camp on the edge and wait for the light at the end of the day. Getting here means hours of rough track and a high clearance vehicle, and operators send two.
