Short description of Konye-Urgench
Konye-Urgench was the capital of Khorezm until the Mongols destroyed it, and what survived is a scatter of brick towers and domes on open steppe north of Daşoguz. The Kutlug Timur minaret is the tallest in Central Asia and leans over the site from a distance. Nearby the Turabek Khanum mausoleum keeps an interior dome of blue and ochre mosaic that is the finest thing in the country. This is a working pilgrimage ground as much as a ruin, and Turkmen visitors far outnumber foreign ones. Crowds are heaviest around Friday prayers and religious holidays.
