Short description of Nokhur
Nokhur is a mountain village in the Kopet Dag whose people speak their own dialect and keep customs found nowhere else in the country. Flat roofed stone houses step up the slope in terraces above walnut and fig gardens, and the air is noticeably cooler than the plain below. Its cemetery is the thing visitors remember, because each grave carries mounted goat horns set there to guide the spirit onward. A hollow plane tree of great age stands near the centre with room inside for several people. The high ridge just above the village marks the Iranian frontier.
