Description
Eschen is the main village of the Liechtenstein Unterland, the lower half of the country separated from the Oberland by a wooded ridge and historically a different territory altogether. The Holy Cross chapel on the Rofenberg above the village is one of the oldest religious sites in the principality, standing on ground used for judicial assemblies. In the neighbouring hamlet of Nendeln the foundations of a Roman villa lie under a protective roof beside the road, and a working pottery there has fired traditional stoveware for generations. The Unterland keeps a slower and plainer character than the valley south of the ridge.
