Description
Balzers is the southernmost municipality of Liechtenstein and holds Gutenberg Castle, the only one in the country that visitors can actually enter. The castle sits on an isolated rock knoll seventy metres above the village, a site occupied since the Neolithic and now used for concerts and open-air theatre in its courtyard and rose garden. Roman and Bronze Age finds from the hill are among the oldest in the principality. The village below keeps painted houses along its main street, and the Ellhorn ridge and the Rhine crossing to Switzerland lie within a short walk.
