Description
Apollonia was the port of Cyrene, built on a narrow shelf between the escarpment and the sea and later a Byzantine capital in its own right. Part of the ancient town has sunk beneath the water, so columns and quays are visible offshore and the harbour moles run out below the surface. On land the Byzantine churches keep their green cipollino columns, and a Greek theatre is cut into the slope with the Mediterranean directly behind the stage. The setting between cliffs and clear water makes it the most photogenic of the Libyan classical sites.
