The Solomon Islands are a scattered nation of nearly a thousand islands in the South Pacific, far from mass tourism. Guadalcanal and the waters of Iron Bottom Sound around the capital Honiara saw fierce Second World War battles, and many wrecks lie close to shore.
Marovo Lagoon in the Western Province is one of the largest saltwater lagoons in the world, while Gizo and Munda are bases for diving and surfing. East Rennell, a raised coral atoll with the largest lake in the insular Pacific, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
