Short description of Savo Island
Savo Island is a small active volcano rising from the sea about two hours by boat northwest of Honiara, and one of the easiest outer islands to reach from the capital. Its most unusual sight is the megapode field, where birds the size of chickens lay their eggs in warm volcanic sand and leave the heat of the ground to hatch them. A walk inland leads up the forested crater to steaming vents and hot springs. Spinner dolphins often gather in the channel on the way over. There are a few simple guesthouses, and the megapodes are best seen at dawn after a night on the island.
