Short description of Gizo
Gizo is the capital of the Western Province and the second town of the Solomon Islands, a waterfront of stores and a busy market on a small island reached by plane from Honiara or by the overnight ferry. It is the main dive centre of the country, with the Japanese freighter Toa Maru, a sunken fighter plane and reefs full of colour close by. A short boat ride leads to Kennedy Island, where the young John F. Kennedy swam ashore after his torpedo boat was sunk in 1943. Across the channel rises Kolombangara, a round extinct volcano whose forested crater can be climbed in two days.
