Solomon Islands · New Georgia
Short description of Marovo Lagoon
Marovo Lagoon, off New Georgia, is one of the largest saltwater lagoons in the world, enclosed by a double chain of forested barrier islands and hundreds of small islets. Its outer drop-offs and passages are among the richest dive sites in the Pacific, with sharks, rays and huge schools of fish, and the resort on Uepi Island at the edge of the reef has made them famous. Inside the lagoon, villages build dugout canoes and carve ebony and kerosene wood into bowls and figures. Guests paddle between the islands and stay in small eco-lodges. Flights from Honiara land at Seghe, and the Western Province ferry calls on its way to Gizo.
