Short description of East Rennell

East Rennell is the southern third of Rennell Island, the largest raised coral atoll in the world, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its almost untouched forest and wildlife. At its heart lies Lake Tegano, a former lagoon now lifted above the sea and turned brackish, the largest lake in the insular Pacific, dotted with limestone islets. Endemic birds, sea kraits and flying foxes live around its shores. The site is on the list of World Heritage in Danger because of logging nearby. Small planes fly from Honiara to the island, then a rough track and a canoe lead to the lake villages, where guests stay in simple homes.
