Short description of Honiara
Honiara is the capital of the Solomon Islands, a low sprawl along the north coast of Guadalcanal where almost every visitor arrives. In 1942 and 1943 the island was the scene of one of the longest campaigns of the Pacific War, and its ridges and beaches are still full of memorials, rusting guns and aircraft. The American memorial on Skyline Ridge and the Japanese one on Mount Austen look over the town, and guides lead tours to Bloody Ridge and the Vilu open-air museum. Wrecks lie in the shallows of Iron Bottom Sound. The central market, the national museum and the ferries to the outer islands fill the town.
