Short description of Munda

Munda is a village on the south coast of New Georgia at the edge of the Roviana Lagoon, built around an airfield that the Japanese began and the Americans captured in 1943. Relics of that fighting fill a small local museum, and planes, tanks and guns lie in the bush and on the reef. Boats cross the lagoon to Skull Island, where the skulls of chiefs and enemies from the head-hunting era are kept in a stone shrine. The diving is superb, with walls, caverns and wrecks close to shore. Munda is also the gateway to Tetepare, the largest uninhabited island in the South Pacific, reached by boat.
