Description
Villimalé (ވިލިމާލެ), also known as Villingili, is the fifth administrative district of Malé and lies around two kilometres west of the capital. The island combines village like tranquillity with lush tropical vegetation and public beaches, creating a striking contrast to densely built Malé. Bicycles and pedestrians shape the streetscape, as vehicles with fossil fuel engines are not permitted. Villimalé is primarily a residential island and a popular escape for residents of Malé. Guesthouses, cafés and restaurants offer visitors a glimpse into everyday life in the Maldives. The new transport connections created by the Thilamalé project are gradually reshaping the island’s relationship with the capital.
