Description
Utheemu (އުތީމު) is a small island in Haa Alifu Atoll, the northernmost atoll of the Maldives, and an important site in the country’s history. The island is best known for Utheemu Ganduvaru, the traditional wooden residence of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, one of the Maldives’ most celebrated national heroes. He grew up here before leading the resistance against Portuguese rule in the 16th century alongside his brothers. The historic residence offers a glimpse into traditional Maldivian architecture and the lifestyle of a prosperous island household. Utheemu combines national heritage with Maldivian culture and ranks among the country’s most significant historic sites.
