Rasdhoo

Rasdhoo (ރަސްދޫ) is a small inhabited island on the rim of the little Rasdhoo Atoll, the capital of Alif Alif Atoll and a well known base for divers. Its compact village, beaches and nearby reefs make it one of the most popular local islands west of Malé.

Rasdhoo is famous for its underwater life. At Madivaru corner, early morning dives can bring encounters with scalloped hammerhead sharks rising from the deep, and the reef walls are home to grey reef sharks, eagle rays and turtles. Night snorkelling reveals plankton, rays and glowing marine life, and dolphins are often seen along the atoll rim. Show more

On land, the island offers a designated bikini beach, a house reef and a lively village with a mosque and small shops. Just across the lagoon, the uninhabited islands of Madivaru and Madivaru Finolhu, with their sandbanks and turquoise water, are ideal for picnics and swimming. Big game fishing trips on the outer reef add another option.

Rasdhoo is reached from Malé by speedboat in about an hour or by public ferry. Several days suit diving and island life. Hammerhead sightings are never guaranteed and depend on conditions, and the dry season from December to April brings the clearest water. Modest dress is expected in the village, and alcohol is not sold.
