Thoddoo

Thoddoo (ތޮއްޑޫ) is an inhabited island north of Rasdhoo, administratively part of Alif Alif Atoll. Unlike most Maldivian islands, it is known as a farming island, with fields of watermelon, papaya and vegetables covering much of its interior.

The island's fertile soil and freshwater make agriculture its main livelihood, and its watermelons and papayas are sold across the country. Sandy paths lead through plantations shaded by coconut palms, and farm tours by bicycle show how crops are grown on a coral island. Fruit stalls in the village sell fresh melon and juices. Thoddoo also has a deep past, and the remains of a Buddhist temple were excavated here, where a Roman coin was found. Show more

Palm fringed beaches surround the island, including a designated bikini beach on the northern shore, and the reef drop off close to the shore is popular for snorkelling. Excursions lead to dive sites with mantas and turtles in the Ari atolls, to sandbanks and to quiet spots for sunset at the western point.

Thoddoo is reached from Malé by public ferry or speedboat in about one to two hours. Several days suit a relaxed stay among guesthouses and fields. The dry season from December to April brings the calmest seas. Modest dress is expected in the village, and alcohol is not sold.
