Thulusdhoo

Thulusdhoo (ތުލުސްދޫ) is the capital of Kaafu Atoll and an inhabited island in the North Malé Atoll, known as one of the classic surf destinations of the Maldives. It lies about half an hour by speedboat from the airport.

Off its eastern reef breaks Cokes, a powerful, hollow right hand wave named after the soft drink bottling plant on the island. Across the channel, Chickens offers a long left. Both waves break over shallow coral and suit experienced surfers, while surf guesthouses, board rental and boat transfers to Sultans and Honkys make the island a convenient base. Show more

Thulusdhoo is also a working island with a harbour, a mosque, boatyards where dhonis are built and repaired, and quiet sandy lanes. A designated bikini beach faces a turquoise lagoon, and the house reef, sandbanks and nearby dive sites with mantas and reef sharks offer plenty for those who do not surf. Evenings bring fishing trips and sunsets over the atoll.

Speedboats and public ferries connect Thulusdhoo with Malé. A week or more suits a surf stay. The surf season runs from about March to October, while the drier months from December to April bring calmer seas. Modest dress is expected in the village, and alcohol is not sold on the island.
