Description
Villány is the warmest wine region in Hungary and the country's red wine centre, a run of villages along the southern slope of a limestone ridge close to the Croatian border. Cabernet franc does better here than almost anywhere in Europe and has become the region's signature. The cellar row at Villánykövesd is a street of whitewashed barrel-vaulted doorways cut into the loess, most of them open for tasting. Swabian families settled the villages in the eighteenth century and their building style is still the local one. Distances between the cellars are short enough to walk between tastings.
