Description
Győr sits where three rivers meet halfway between Budapest and Vienna and has one of the best preserved baroque old towns in Hungary, a quarter of ochre and pink facades, corner balconies and inner courtyards that survived because the city was never a front line. The cathedral holds the gilded reliquary bust of Saint Ladislaus, one of the finest pieces of medieval goldsmithing in Europe. Pannonhalma Abbey stands on a hill twenty kilometres south, a Benedictine foundation of the year 996 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The centre is compact and almost everything of interest lies within it.
